Annalene Pennell Austin, age 80, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, October17th, 2011 at Catawba Valley Hospice. She was born on August 13th, 1931 in Caldwell County. She was the daughter of the late Grover and Estelle Poarch Pennell. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church and was a homemaker with a great love for her 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cloyd P. Austin; brothers: Samuel, Kelly, and Clevie Pennell; son-in-law, Rusty Sigmon; daughter, Carolyn A. Anderson; and great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Rose Austin. Those left to cherish her memory include 1 son, James C. “Jimmy” Austin of Taylorsville; daughters: Jane Drum & husband Allen of Granite Falls, Connie Sigmon of Taylorsville, and Pam Brittain & husband Paul of Bethlehem. She also leaves behind grandsons: Jeremy Baker & wife Shelly, Jason Baker, Mark Austin & wife Marissa, Shannon Austin, Stephen Anderson & wife Kelsey, Justin Austin & wife Miranda, and Xavier Brittain; granddaughters: Adrienne Hampton & husband Ben, Dana Helton & husband Zack, Lauren Austin, and Hillary Sigmon, in addition to numerous great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brother, Hill Pennell & wife Bessie; sister, Mary Thomas; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends: her pastor, Rev. Eddie Jolly; Linda Reid, John Hall & Betty Echerd, Mary Watts, James & Martha Brown, Roger Enloe, Ollie Bell Austin, Brenda Jones, and many others… The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, October 20th, from 5 – 7:00 P.M. at Alexander Funeral Service. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 21st, at Lebanon Baptist Church in Taylorsville at 3:00 P.M. where Rev. Eddie Jolly, Rev. Keith Childers, and Rev. Grady Blakely will officiate. Ola Sue Rowe Grinton, age 80, of Taylorsville, NC departed this earthly life on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at her residence. She was born June 1, 1931 to the late Rev. J.C. and Mrs. Vertie C. Rowe. She attended school in Alexander County and Winston-Salem Teacher’s College. She was a Teacher Assistant in Alexander County schools for 28 years. She joined St. John Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful and dedicated member until her death. During her active years at St. John, Sue was the Young Adult Sunday School Teacher, President of the Missionary Circle, Young Adult Choir Director, a member of the usher board and a member of the Senior choir. She also served as secretary of the Yadkin Valley Auxiliary, Secretary of the Alexander County Union, District II Chairperson of the One Day District Conference, member of Yadkin Valley Sunday School Convention Board and Teacher of the Adult Women’s Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her husband Chester L. Grinton, her parents, two brothers, Rev. W.N. Rowe and James P. Rowe, and two sisters, Mary Lou Rowe and Lucy Rowe Little. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Chester L. “Scooter” Grinton, Jr. and wife Helen; one daughter Bonita S. Grinton; one grandson DeChane Grinton; two granddaughters, Camilia Grinton and Dara Grinton; one great-grandson Jeremiah Whitaker; two brothers Rev. John C. Rowe and wife Priscilla, and Rev. C.E.Rowe and wife Gladys; five sisters, Mary Saner, Mildred Ferguson, Naomi Rowe, Jeanette Suddith, and Margaret Rowe; one brother-in-law Howard L. Little; sister-in-law Shirley L. Rowe, one aunt Myrtle Rowe, and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at Alexander Funeral Service on Wednesday, October 19 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. “Tony” Anthony Clell Blair, age 47, of Taylorsville, passed away on Saturday, October 15th, 2011 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Tony was born in Henry County, Virginia on May 16th, 1964 to parents Luther Rhodes Blair and Doris Joy Huckaby. He enjoyed watching football, and also liked to hunt, fish, and play the guitar. He attended Bethlehem Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half-brother, Rhodes Blair. Those left to cherish his memory include his fiancé, Judy Pharr; son, Michael Blair & wife Leah; step-daughter, Danielle Blair; the mother of his son and step-daughter, Cindy Norton; brother, Patrick Blair, his half-sister, JoAnn Hawkins; grandson, Greyson Patrick Blair; cousins: Anna Donahoe Mick and Vickie Binstead; and his niece, Lara Blair. Larry Blaine Reid, age 72, of Taylorsville, passed away on Thursday, October 13th, 2011. He was born in Caldwell County on December 13th, 1938 to parents Hayden Burke and Cecil Pennell Reid. He attended Oxford Memorial Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Greer Reid; brother, Don Reid; 2 grandchildren, Roger Shane Adkins and Atina Adkins; and his great-granddaughter, Skylar Millwood. Those left to cherish his memory are his children: Sue Gilbert & husband Loyd, Jim Adkins & wife Sissy – all of Caldwell County; Colon Reid & wife Anita of Alexander County, Roger Adkins & wife Kathy, Bo Adkins, and Edward Adkins & wife Anita – also all of Caldwell County. Margaret “Lucille” Mays Chapman, age 86, of Taylorsville, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in Westwood Hills Nursing and RehabilitationCenterin Wilkesboro. Born in AlexanderCountyon January 11, 1925 to the late Ralph William and Goldie Teague Mays, she had been a fabric sewer in the Textiles Industry as well as a member of LiledounBaptistChurch. Besides her parents, Mrs. Chapman is preceded in death by husband Kremer Chapman; three brothers: Conley, Frank, and Lynn Mays, and two sisters Helen Elder and Martha Warren, as well as two infant sisters. Those remaining to honor and cherish her memories are one son, Dale Chapman and wife, Rita; One daughter, Kathryn C. Chapman and husband Steve. Two brothers: Arthur and Lewis Mays. Three grandchildren: Cheryl Wike, Dana Huffman and Husband Robbie, Cory Chapman and wife Danielle. Two step-grandchildren: Melanie Sebastian, and Jim Sabastian and wife Julie. Six great-grandchildren: Dalton Wike, Luke, Adam, and Jacob Huffman, Jaden, Nathlie, and Evan Chapman. Three step-great grandchildren: Montana Webb, Bridgette, and Wyatt Sabastian, and her best friend Alice Brown; as well as a host of nephews and nieces. Annie Lou Auton Bowman, age 86, of Taylorsville, passed away on Monday morning, October 10th, 2011 in the Sterling House in Hickory. Annie was born in Caldwell County on July 17th, 1925 to parents Julius Edgar and Fannie Lou Anna Beach Auton. She was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wade Bowman, in 2004, whom she married on October 10th, 1942; daughter, Sylvia Ann Bowman Looper, in 1981; 6 brothers: Glenn, Leonard, Pete, Dave, Clyde, and Troy Auton; and 5 sisters: Callie Talbert, Nina Reed, Ethel Price, Lois Bumgarner, and Ora Lee Johnson. Those left to cherish her memory include her 3 sons: James R. Bowman & wife Wanda of Lenoir, Dwight E. Bowman & wife Martha of Claremont, and Gary Douglas Bowman & wife Karen of Bethlehem; 2 daughters: Barbara Gail Bowman Looper & husband Lindsay of Grace Chapel, and Patricia Dawn Bowman Burke & husband Quentin of the Ellendale community; 2 sisters: Jean Spencer and Irene Teeters – both of Caldwell County; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, and 2 expected great-great-grandchildren. Billy Ray Johnson, age 78, of the Ellendale community, passed away at his home on Friday, October 7th. He was born in Alexander County to the late Charlie Butler and Vela Paige Johnson. As a member of Antioch Baptist Church, he previously served as a church Deacon and a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Johnson was one of the original founding members of the Brushy Mountain Beagle Club where he loved to train dogs. He had been a supervisor in the Furniture Industry prior to retirement. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Agnes Johnson of the home. One daughter; Merylin Davis and husband, Kenneth, and one son; Lonnie Ray Johnson and wife Kathy. Two granddaughters; Brandy Rowe and husband John Paul; and Lerin Berwick and husband Aaron. One Grandson, Trevor Davis. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Michael Hill, Kennedy and Calvin Rowe, Kaylor, Eowyn, and Finn Berwick. One Brother Maurice Johnson, One Sister Jane Lackey, and a special caretaker Ruth Royal, as well as a number of nephews and nieces. Hubert Partin, age 83, of Taylorsville, passed away at PalliativeCareCenterand Hospice of Catawba Valley on Tuesday evening, October 4th, 2011. Hubert was born on May 21st, 1928 in Cheona, Kentucky to parents Thomas James and Bammie Webb Partin. He was a member of Oxford Memorial Baptist Church. He enjoyed farming and was the owner and operator of Blue Ridge Oil Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 2 sons: Charles “Ricky” and Sylvester Partin; his sister, Othella Partin; and 3 brothers: Tee, Melburn, and Elmer Partin. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Poarch Partin of the home; 1 son, Anthony Brent Partin of Taylorsville; their daughter, Sylvia Partin of Black Mountain; 1 sister, Sylvia Donald of Virginia Beach; granddaughter, Jessica Farley of Hickory; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
