Dover Cecil Lackey, age 95, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, at Valley Nursing Center in Alexander County. He was born Tuesday, May 29, 1928, in Alexander County to the late George Howard Lackey and Lois Head Lackey. Mr. Lackey attended Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. He enjoyed driving a truck, fox hunting, trading dogs, horses, and mules. Dover loved his family and cherished spending time with them. He was a loving father, husband, and grandfather.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Authur, Donald, Hayden, Roger, and Gilbert Lackey.

Those left cherish the memories the memories Dover include his wife of 77 years, Ruth Mayberry Lackey; children, Martha Bentley (Roy), George Lackey (Connie), Sharon Lackey, Byron Lackey (Vickie); seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, one step great-great- grandchild; sister, Linda Lackey Lee (Jerry); sister-in-law, Mildred Lackey; special friends, Ronald Tilley, Randy Hamby, Kenneth Head, Herman Hughes, and Herb Kelsoe; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A visitation will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at South River Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. Brian Eades and Rev. Eddie Jolly will officiate. Andy Lackey, Avery Lackey, Kyle Lackey, Shaun Lackey, Wesley Lackey, and Richard Duncan will serve as pallbearers.

Harold Lovvorn, age 75, passed away Friday, January 26, 2024, at his home in Alexander County. He was born in  Coweta County, Georgia to the late Frances Neill on Saturday, March 27, 1948. Harold drove a truck most of his life and was a member of North Catawba Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, race cars, and joking around with people. Harold loved his family dearly and cherished spending time with them.

Including his mother, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Joe Lovvorn, Stanley Lovvorn; daughters, Paula Rogers Edwards, Angela Blackwood Keller; and nephew, Brian Matthew Kirby.

Those left to cherish the memories of Harold include his wife of 42 years, Debra Blackwood Lovvorn, daughter, Vonnie Lovvorn Martin, grandchildren, Annabel Sage Martin and Damion Scott Martin all of the home; grandchildren, Allen  Blackwood (Savannah) of Shady Springs, WV, Zackary Edwards (Ashtyn) of Morganton, NC, Jessica Edwards of Granite Falls, NC, Katherine Edwards of Vale, NC; great-grandchildren, Ryder Blackwood of Shady Springs, WV, Arden Edwards of Morganton, NC; brother-in-law, Mike Kirby (Angela) of Taylorsville, NC; sister-in-law, Tammy Travis (Jimmy) of Conover, NC; Stephen Edwards of Vale, NC; nephews, Rocky Travis (Theresa), Anthony Kirby (Danielle), Joshua Kirby (Becca); nieces, Tracy Travis (Dustin), Sarah Reeves, Samantha Little (Charlie); and numerous great nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Monday, January 29, 2024, at Alexander Funeral Service from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. The funeral service will be Monday, January 29, 2024, in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel at 12:00 pm. Rev. Paul Schronce will officiate. Inurnment will be with the family.

Clyde Wayne Roberts, age 82, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Valley Nursing Center in Alexander County. He was born to the late Clyde Walker Roberts and Elsie Davis Roberts in Cherokee County on Tuesday, April 15, 1941.  Mr. Roberts was of the Christian faith and enjoyed helping people. He also enjoyed traveling, square dancing, flying airplanes, and building things especially building his house. Wayne loved his family and grandchildren, and cherished being able to spend time with them.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Bradley W. Roberts; brothers, Earnie, Virgil, Kenneth, and Herman Roberts; sister, Edith Mitchell.

Those left to cherish the memories of Wayne include his wife of 60 years, Shirley J. Roberts; daughter, Denita R. Tysinger (Ralph); daughter-in-law, Dawn D. Artis-Roberts; grandchildren, Carrie B. Wiles (Greg), Crystal R. Baity (Dustin J. Waddell), Cassy L. Baity, William W. Roberts (Lauren), Ethan B. Roberts; great-grandchildren, Lilly R. Baity, Alleigh A. Wiles, Nova D. Roberts, Miracle R. McIntyre, Dawson B. Roberts; special god-son, Shay Starnes; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Burial will be in the Salisbury National Cemetery at a later date.

Evelyn Harris Henderson Sain passed away January 15, 2024, at Trinity Village in Catawba County. She was born to the late Sanford Harris and Juanita Johnson Harris in Wilkes County. During her working career, she was an executive assistant in the furniture industry. Ruby was a member of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church, Eastern Star in Hibriten, Women of the Moose – Hickory Lodge, and Alexander County Republican Women.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, J.P. Henderson, second husband, Gary Dean Sain, and stepson, Terry Sain.

Those left to cherish the memories of Ruby include her daughter, Jamie Harrington, sons, David Henderson, Preston Henderson; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2024, in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Rev. Tim Jolly will officiate.

The family will accept flowers.

Ronald “Ron” Evans Turner, age 59, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Catawba County. He was born to Karin Angelika Turner and the late Jack Louis Turner on Friday, August 7, 1964, in Furth, Germany. He was a teacher and football coach for South Caldwell, Alexander Central, Bunker Hill, Hickory, R.L. Patton, high schools, and retired from Wilkes Central High School as head football coach. Ron attended Stony Point Baptist Church. He enjoyed football, golf, tennis, and he especially enjoyed watching his boys play sports.

Including his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Charlotte Wishon, and paternal grandmother, Martha Turner.

Those left to cherish the memories of Ron include his wife of 18 years, Elisabeth Robertson Turner, mother, Karin Angelika Turner, two sons, Jackson Thomas Turner and Brooks William Turner who he adored, and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.

A visitation will be held Monday, January 22, 2024, at Stony Point Baptist Church from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Stony Point Baptist Church at 3:30 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Rick Norman, Rev. Durrant Barr, and Rev. Parker French will officiate. J.J. Turner, Steve Turner, Bob Sharp, Jimbo Spivey, Marty Knapp, Mark Coffey, Bob Phaup, and Chris Penley will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Flip Peavler, Scott Randall, Tom Harper, Richard Hadschin, Arland Mays, Nathan Robinson, Joe Glass, and John McKee.

Albert Price Pennell, age 95, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Carolina Caring in Catawba County. He was born to the late Gus and Alice Pennell on Friday, April 20, 1928, in Alexander County. Mr. Pennell retired from the furniture industry. He was the owner/operator of a sawmill and enjoyed hauling logs. Albert was a member of Mt. Ridge Baptist Church. He enjoyed working on cars, going camping, tractors, and going to Mayflower or Captains Galley for their fried catfish and baked sweet potato.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Pennell, son, William “Sunny” Pennell, three sons-in-law, Dennis Sigmon, Mark Robbins, Richard Phillips, five sisters, and three brothers.

Those left to cherish the memories of Albert include his daughters, Nina Ruth Sigmon, Marsha Jane Spaugh (Timothy), Cynthia Rose Robbins, Patricia Lee Roark (Thomas); grandchildren, Douglas Sigmon, Dawn McCoy (Sidney McCoy II), Frankie Speagle, Scott Phillips; great-grandchildren, Douglas Ralph Sigmon Jr., Sidney McCoy III, Ashleigh Waugh (Cameron), Shyann Sigmon; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Mt. Ridge Baptist Church from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm. The funeral service will be Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Mt. Ridge Baptist Church at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Mark Adams, Rev. Allen Fox, and Rev. Billy Mitchell will officiate. Reggie Hawkins, Rodney Pennell, Douglas Sigmon, Bruce Fox, Scott Phillips, and Quentin Burke will serve as pallbearers.

Jo Ann Fox Lowe, age 89, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024, at her home in Alexander County. She was born to the late Bryant William Fox and Aquillia Fincannon Fox in Alexander County on Wednesday, January 24, 1934. During her working career, Ms. Lowe worked as a nurse at the Alexander County Health Department until she retired. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was very active in Billy Ingram’s Sunday School Class. Jo Ann was an avid reader, enjoyed crosswords, and traveling to the beach. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchild.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernadette Cranford, Katrinia White; one brother, Glade Fox; one niece, Jennifer Byerley.

Those left to cherish the memories of Jo Ann include her son, Harold Edward Lowe Jr.; granddaughter, Mallory Huffman; three brothers, Mack Fox, Hendle Fox, William Bill Fox, special nephew, Derrek Byerley; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Liledoun Baptist Church Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Rev. Joel Simpson will officiate.

Ruth Etta Pennell White of Taylorsville went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 12, 2024, at Valley Nursing Home. Born March 26, 1931, in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Harry Lee and Beutrice White Pennell.

Ruth Etta enjoyed working outdoors and was a poultry farmer for over 50 years. She was an active member of Three Forks Baptist Church for 70 years. She was the church’s librarian for 39 years and sang in the choir for years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Jimmie Levoy White, Sr.; daughter, Cynthia Rice; two brothers, Marvin H. Pennell of Conover, and Kerney Pennell of Taylorsville; and a sister, Patsy Haas of Taylorsville.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her son, Jimmy White, Jr. (Glenda); son-in-law, Frank Rice; four grandchildren, Yalanda Lail (Todd), Lance White (Mary Ann), Allison Braswell (Mark), and Franklin Rice (Mindy); 13 great-grandchildren, Jake (Brooke), Grayson, and Cole Lail, Kara Melton (Blaine), Zoe Braswell, Riley, Cooper, Logan White, Camden and Thomas Hurst, Lane and Charlee Rice; sister, Geneva Deal; sisters-in-law, Gilda Pennell and Shirley Pennell; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Three Forks Baptist Church from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The funeral service will be Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Three Forks Baptist Church at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church Cemetery. Dr. Carson Moseley will officiate.

Martha Sue Gant Starnes, age 82, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Trinity Ridge in Catawba County shortly after the family finished singing gospel songs to her. She was born to the late Troy Clyde Gant and Mary Sue McAlpin Gant in Alexander County on Tuesday, November 4, 1941. Ms. Starnes was the first Mrs. Alexander County. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and volunteered with everything at church. She was an avid volunteer in her community, volunteering with Forgiven Ministries, Curtis’ Kitchen, Mary’s Prayer Room, and donated a lot to Mt. Pisgah Food Bank.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, James Lackey; husband, Jerry Ray Starnes; brother, Curtis Gant; brother-in-law, Ronnie Hartness.

Those left to cherish the memories of Martha include her children, Lisa Starnes, Jason Starnes; sister, Brenda Hartness; four grandchildren, Andrew Little (Tabatha Hefner), Jonathan Clontz (Cutie), Mattie Starnes (Aiden), Karlee Starnes; one great-grandchild, Jackson Clontz; sister-in-law, Nancy Gant; and nephews, Marty Gant, Jeffrey Hartness (Michelle).

A visitation will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Bethlehem Baptist Church from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 19, 2024, at Bethlehem Baptist Church at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Liledoun Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Dean Chambers will officiate. Jeff Hartness, Marty Gant, Hunter Hartness, Dale Clontz, Randy Icard, and Isaac Icard will serve as pallbearers.

Jean Louise Carrigan Kirksey, age 76, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Catawba County. She was born to the late Paul Franklin Carrigan and Sadie Little Carrigan in Alexander County on Tuesday, March 11, 1947. Mrs. Kirksey was a member of Pentecostal Church of The Living God in Newton, NC. Jean enjoyed playing bingo, doing puzzle books, and talking to people. She loved her family.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Kirksey; brother, Lee Roy Carrigan.

Those left to cherish the memories of Jean include her sons, Rickie Carrigan (Barbara) and Terry Williams (Tracy); stepdaughters, Susie Witt (Michael), Peggi Mitchell; grandchildren, Cole and Lexi Carrigan, Emily Matthews; sister, Glenda Mecimore; step-grandchildren, John Matheson, Jennifer Matthews, Alex Witt (Noelle), Nikki Witt; step-great-grandchildren, Millicent Dean, Greyson Witt; sister-in-law, Daphne Carrigan; nieces, Angela Mecimore and Cynthia Mecimore.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be with the family.
