Carolyn Ann Price Fox, age 77, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Alexander County on Friday, May 31, 2024. She was born on Monday, November 25, 1946, to the late Levi Franklin and Cleo Bowman Price in Alexander County.

Carolyn was a woman who valued her family above all else, always cherishing the time spent with her loved ones. Her heart and loving nature touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn is reunited with her brothers Raeford Price, Walter Price, JD Price, her sister Emogene Keever, and a nephew Scott Price.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories that will be forever cherished by her surviving family members including her husband of 56 years, Alan Fox; son Reggie Fox (Tanya); granddaughter Amber Fox; great-granddaughter Alaina Grace; sister Mary Kaylor; brother Eugene Price; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Aside from her dedication to her work and family, Carolyn also found joy in simple pleasures such as solving word search puzzles and playing cards. Her presence illuminated the lives of those around her, and her memory will continue to bring comfort and warmth to those who knew and loved her.

As we mourn the loss of Carolyn Fox, let us also celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the love she shared with everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with her. May she rest in peace knowing that she was truly loved and will always be remembered with deep affection.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joy Dawn Smith Pennell, age 74, known for her kind heart and dedication to caring for others, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Amorem Hospice in Caldwell County. Joy was born on Friday, August 12, 1949, to the late Coy and Elizabeth Smith in Caldwell County. Joy’s life was defined by her love for family and her nurturing spirit and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

During her working career, Joy served as a caregiver, touching the lives of many with her compassionate care. She found joy in looking after others and cherished the time spent with her grandchildren the most. 

Joy had a vibrant personality and a zest for life. She enjoyed gathering around campfires, spending time with her beloved cat, dancing to music that moved her soul, and enjoyed going out whenever she could. A nature enthusiast, she had a special fondness for the mountains, particularly Prices Park. Joy found solace in spontaneous adventures, embracing the thrill of exploring new places.

Including her parents, Joy was preceded in death by her daughter, Tabitha Smith.

Left to cherish Joy’s memory are her surviving family members: daughter Tamila Miller; son Phillip Griffin (Kristina); grandchildren Kaylie Griffin, Avery Griffin, Faith Griffin, and Aiden Griffin. Joy’s warm presence and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Dorothy Elizabeth Surles Feimster, affectionately known as “Dottie,” age 89, left her earthly home on Saturday, May 25, 2024, in Forsyth County. She was born on Friday, January 4, 1935, to the late Joe Ennis and Adner Surles in Johnston County. Dottie lived a life filled with love, resilience, and dedication to her family.

Dorothy’s journey began with early hardships as she was orphaned at the tender age of 12 when she tragically lost both her parents. Despite this early loss, she displayed remarkable strength and perseverance. Raised at the Barium Springs Orphanage in Troutman, she grew into a strong woman who later took on the role of a single mother to four boys. Her unwavering love and dedication shone through as she raised her sons with grace and fortitude.

Throughout her life, Dorothy worked diligently, working many years as a waitress before spending a decade at Walmart, and then later in life transitioning to care for homebound individuals. Her compassionate nature and nurturing spirit were evident not only in her professional roles but also in her personal relationships.

Dorothy cherished her family above all else and found immense joy in their company, especially when surrounded by her grandchildren that lovingly called her “Granny Duck.” She created beautiful memories with them and took pride in being an integral part of their lives.

Apart from her immediate family members who have preceded her in death, Dorothy is survived by her loving sons: Stan Feimster (Judy), Scott Feimster (Maria), Bruce Feimster (Renee’), and Kelly Feimster. Additionally, she leaves behind her nephew Robert Feimster (Brigette), along with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In her leisure time, Dorothy found solace in reading and cherished moments spent socializing with others. Known for her warm presence and infectious laughter, she effortlessly drew people towards her.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate the life of Dorothy Elizabeth Surles Feimster will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at the Taylorsville City Cemetery at 3:00 pm. Rev. Mark Marshall will officiate.

As we bid farewell to Dorothy, let us remember her for the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the strength she embodied. May her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing this remarkable woman.

Christy Renee Deal Hamby, age 51, beloved wife, mother, Lolly, and friend, passed unexpectedly at her home in Alexander County on Friday, May 24, 2024. She was known for her warm smile, and her innate ability to embrace everyone with open arms.

Christy was born on Saturday, March 17, 1973, in Alexander County to the late George Deal and Linda Ensley Shackleford. Christy’s life was one dedicated to love and family. Her career at Baker Furniture in customer service was just one aspect of her life; she found true joy in spending time with her loved ones. Christy’s passions were varied – from baking with her granddaughter Brynleigh to indulging in reading, decorating, swimming, crafting, planning events, and antique shopping. She had a zest for life that radiated in everything she did. Christy was a member of Fresh Oil Ministries of Hickory.

Christy is survived by her loving husband of 19 years Chris Hamby; her daughters Savanna Wilhem (Tyler) and Nikki Hamby (Corey); precious granddaughter Brynleigh Hamby; brothers Shane Williamson (Dana) and Terry Deal; as well as her fur baby Stormi, and two granddogs, Miley and Dolly. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish the memories they shared with Christy.

A visitation to honor Christy’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Alexander Funeral Service from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at 6:00 pm in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel. Pastors Tammy and David Pettry will officiate. Inurnment will be with the family. In memory of Christy’s vibrant spirit and kind heart, let us come together to celebrate the beautiful life she lived.

The family will accept flowers.

In every smile shared and every warm embrace given, Christy’s legacy of love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May she rest in peace knowing she was deeply cherished and will be fondly remembered by many.

Carl Swan Hand, age 87, born on Monday, March 22, 1937, in Burke County, was a man who treasured his family above all else and found immense joy in their company. His recent passing on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Taylorsville House in Alexander County has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him.

Throughout his life, Carl was known for his strong work ethic and his passion for managing rental properties. However, it was his role within his family that truly defined him. He shared a deep love with his loved ones and made sure to nurture these relationships with love and care.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Bonnie Cline Hand, as well as his wife Lois Mayrene Hand. He is also reunited with his brothers Lonnie, Paul, Hayden, Glenn, and Ned Hand, along with his sisters Linda Rogers and Myrtle Lail.

While Carl may no longer be with us, he leaves behind a legacy that will be carried on by those he held dear. He is survived by his sons Tommy Hand and Danny Hand (Cindy), who will continue to honor his memory. Carl’s grandchildren Danielle, Dustin, and Nicholas will fondly remember their grandfather, as will his four great-grandchildren. Additionally, Ethel Jones remains to cherish the moments shared with her brother.

A visitation to celebrate Carl’s life will take place on Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 3:45 pm at Antioch Baptist Church. This will be followed by a funeral service starting at 4:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Mark Morris will officiate. Doug Jones, Kevin Cline, Wesley Cline, Matt Moretz, Todd Alexander, and Ryan Turner will serve as pallbearers. Roger Jones, Chad Rogers, and Bryan Hand will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Gordon Lee Oxentine, age 77, a beloved husband, father, and proud veteran who dedicated his life to serving his country in the United States Army, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024, in Catawba County. He was born on Sunday, January12, 1947, in Wilkes County.

Gordon will be remembered for his deep love for his family and the joy he found in spending time with them. His warm personality and caring nature touched the lives of all who knew him. Gordon had a range of interests that shaped his life. He took pleasure in gardening, tending to honeybees, indulging in trout fishing adventures, and selflessly helping others whenever he could. He attended Macedonia Baptist Church and was a regular supporter of St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Virlea Greene, Martha Cox, Shirley Sipe, Carrie Fox, Cora Oxentine, and Mary Sue Speaks; brothers, Clarence Oxentine, Hubert Oxentine, Richard Oxentine, and Carroll Oxentine Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Judy Oxentine, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Together they raised their sons Bryan Oxentine (Amy) and Daniel Lee Oxentine (Shelia). The family circle extended to include a special daughter, Holly Bentley. Gordon’s memory will also live on through his grandchildren: Stephanie Chester, Kerri Hopke, Robert Lee Oxentine, Michael Aaron Oxentine, AJ Hopke (Amanda), Caitlyn Dickerson (Andrew), Jonathan Oxentine; and great-grandchildren Layla Oxentine, Tristian Oxentine, Emma Tollie, Brandon Oxentine, Aurelia Oxentine, Caleb Oxentine, Elanor and Millie Hopke, Gunner, Phoebe, and Charlie Dickerson.

In addition to his immediate family, Gordon leaves behind siblings James and Roger Oxentine and a host of nieces and nephews.


The visitation for Gordon Lee Oxentine will be held at Macedonia Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 2:45 pm and followed by the funeral service at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Taylor Pennell will officiate. Dean Fox, Ricky Speaks, William Speaks, James Speaks, Garrett Speaks, Joseph Daniels will serve as pallbearers. AJ Hopke and Andrew Dickerson will serve as honorary pallbearers. A proud veteran who served with honor and dignity, Gordon will be laid to rest with military honors.

Sean Darrel Vardell, age 38, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024, in Catawba County. He was born on Tuesday, February 4, 1986, in Wood County, Wisconsin. Sean was known for his passion for engineering and mechanical skills, his love for racing outlaw carts and sprint cars, his enjoyment of riding motorcycles, and being a farmer with a huge heart for animals – especially donkeys, horses, cows, and goats. His affection extended to his beloved pets as well. Sean graduated from NASCAR Tech in 2007 and was a dedicated engineer with Burnett Promotions and finished his career as foreman. He was of the Christian faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Steve Vardell.

Sean’s memory will forever be cherished by his surviving family and friends. He is survived by his wife Terra Gedeon Vardell, daughter Vayda Quinn Vardell, stepdaughter Raina Fox, mother Belinda Vardell, brother Corey Vardell, sisters Tamra (Tammy) Vardell Hardman and Bailee Vardell, nieces Zooey Vardell and Skylar Walker. Additionally, Sean leaves behind friends like brothers – Mark Goin, Erick Harps, and Jeremy Burnett.

Sean Darrel Vardell will be remembered for the love he had for his family and the joy he found in spending time with them. His dedication to his work and his passion for racing was inspirational to those around him.

Services to honor and celebrate Sean’s life will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2024. A visitation will take place from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm followed by a funeral service at 4:00 pm at Millbridge Speedway, 6670 Mooresville Road, Salisbury, NC 28147. Pastor Justin Siniard will officiate. Sean’s family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Inurnment will be with the family.

Barbara “Bob” Diane Bowman Hollar, age 78, of Taylorsville, known for her dedication to her family and her quick wit and honesty, passed away peacefully at her home in Alexander County. Born on September 7, 1945, to the late Prater Lee and Dora Walker Bowman, Barbara lived a fulfilling life surrounded by the love of family and friends.

In her career Barbara worked as a sewer.  Outside of work she enjoyed drawing, painting, and camping. Her artistic spirit shone through in all aspects of her life.

Barbara’s proudest accomplishments revolved around her role as a homemaker and the deep love she had for her family. She was a pillar of strength and unwavering support for those she held dear. Her kindness and warm presence will be missed by all who knew her.

Raised in the Christian faith, Barbara attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in her childhood and other Baptist Churches as an adult, grounding her values in love and compassion.

Along with her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her brother, James “Ray” Bowman, and two nephews, Chris Cline and Doug Bowman. She is survived by her three sons; Eddie Hollar (Shanna), David Hollar (Shena), Eric Prater Hollar (Kelly); sister Mert Bowman Cline (Larry); grandchildren Jason Hollar, Kyle Hollar (Cassie), Kevin Hollar, Bodie Hollar, Josie Hollar, great-grandchildren Will Hollar and Elizabeth Hollar; sister-in-law Charlotte Harris Bowman; nieces Rita Craig, Sherrie Preslar and April Johnson.

A Memorial Service to honor Barbara’s life will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Alexander Funeral Service. The service will commence at 1:00 pm followed by time to fellowship and remember Barbara’s life. Pastor Nick Johnson will officiate. Inurnment will be with the family.

Melinda Daniels Chapman, a Proverbs 31 woman, has peacefully passed away at the age of 74 in Statesville, NC. She was born on November 19, 1949, to the late Lary Finley and Betsy Ross Walker Daniels. Melinda led a fulfilling life as a homemaker, wife, Christian, and caregiver for her parents. Melinda was a graduate of Taylorsville High School and Gardner Webb University with an associate degree in business.

A woman of many talents and interests, Melinda found joy in various hobbies including gardening, collecting zebras and carousel items, flower arranging, and shopping. However, it was her involvement at East Taylorsville Baptist Church that truly defined her. Melinda’s proudest accomplishments included serving as the church decorator, clerk, overseeing hospitality, Kindergarten Sunday School Teacher, and being an integral part of the building and grounds committee as well as the Teen Crusaders. Melinda will leave a lasting legacy at East Taylorsville Baptist Church. 

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her infant daughter Lauren Ross Chapman, whom she was reunited with in glory. 

Melinda will be dearly missed by her surviving family members and friends, including her beloved spouse Danny Chapman of 53 years.

In addition to her immediate family, Melinda leaves behind a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, in-laws, and cousins who were more like children to her, as well as brothers and sisters.

Services to honor and celebrate the life of Melinda Daniels Chapman will be held on May 6th, 2024. A visitation will take place at East Taylorsville Baptist Church Sanctuary from 2:00 PM to 3:45 PM followed by a Funeral Service starting at 4:00 PM. Rev. Kevin White and Rev. Jeffrey Chapman will officiate. Burial will follow in the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery. Brandon Bumgarner, Daniel Bumgarner, Josh Spicer, Scotty Payne, Jody Chapman, and Brian Chapman will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and great nephews.

Danny Ray Benfield, age 70, passed away in Catawba County at Catawba Valley Medical Center on Thursday, May 2, 2024. Born on Friday, October 2, 1953, in Catawba County, to the late Leroy and Ollie Mae Lackey Benfield. Danny was a compassionate soul known for his kind-hearted nature and willingness to help others. Throughout his life, Danny prioritized the well-being of those around him. His selfless attitude shone through his work at Lowes Hardware, where he assisted customers with a smile on his face. Beyond his professional endeavors, Danny’s dedication extended to serving his country in the United States Navy, a period he deeply cherished. In his leisure time, Danny found solace in the great outdoors. Whether it was hunting or fishing, he embraced nature’s beauty wholeheartedly. Additionally, his commitment to youth development was evident through coaching numerous recreation sports teams in Alexander County and was a member of Tri City Baptist Church of Conover.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Perry Lee Benfield (brother) and Dein Davis (sister).

Danny will be deeply missed by his surviving family and friends. He is survived by his daughter Erin Leanne Davis (Adam), granddaughter Skyler Davis, sisters Jo Ann Seitz and Beulah Price, brothers Larry Benfield (Kathy) and John Benfield, and sister-in-law Doris Benfield.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be with the family.
